ESTABLISHED 1987—The Charleston Motor Carriers Association (CMCA) is a Non-Profit organization with the purpose to provide information to its members, government entities, and the general public regarding the trucking industry; to promote highway safety and improve the industry’s image, and provide an open forum for the advancement of commerce in the region. Its primary activities are to hold regular meetings and social events in the metropolitan area of Charleston, South Carolina, consisting of Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties.
Q. What initiatives has the Charleston Motor Carriers Association supported to help its community amid the COVID-19 outbreak?
A. We have been working with the SC Trucking Association, FMCSA, and Local and State leaders, ensuring our group has a strong voice in establishing State and Federal mandates to maintain sufficient supply chains, and keep our drivers safely on the road.
Q. What is the working relationship between the South Carolina Ports Authority and CMCA?
A. The SCSPA and CMCA work closely together to address issues the trucking community face in regards to the port. We meet with the SCSPA frequently and help communicate with our membership based on changes in procedures or policy at the port.
Q. What partners make up your association? How specifically does CMCA help support small companies?
A. If you operate trucks of any size, you need to join! Our members include trucking companies, freight brokers, employment agencies, dealerships, insurance companies, and many suppliers relative to our industry. Our group has guest speakers monthly to keep us abreast of education, port traffic, SCDOT road, traffic planning, legal reform, and FMCSA rules and regulations.
Q. What projects or events do CMCA have ready for 2022?
A. Projects for 2022: Partnering with local schools to educate students in our fields such as Diesel technology, CDL programs, Logistics and Transportation, and preparing our youth for local employment and community development and career days, recruiting events, and working with the ports relative to smooth traffic flow with the addition of the new Hugh Leatherman terminal.
Q. How can CMCA encourage students to pursue a career in the truck industry?
A. We raise money for scholarships through luncheons, oyster roasts, golf tournaments, and other special events. We also spread the information about scholarships to the companies that are members to allow children of their employees to qualify for scholarships. We offer a full scholarship for a CDL driver every year.
